Environmental Biology Field Research ExperiencesThis is a featured page

This wiki is a collaborative space for two linked field research programs for high school students in the St. Louis area. The two programs were created as part of a new educational partnership between Shaw Nature Reserve and Tyson Research Center. Support for the programs is provided by the National Science Foundation.

SIFT - Shaw Institute for Field Training

The SIFT is a one-week summer field training experience at Shaw Nature Reserve (SNR) combined with 100 hours of additional training activities during the school year.

During the summer and following school year, teens are introduced to a variety of Missouri ecosystems and are involved in important restoration activities including invasive species management, prairie reconstruction, wetland mitigation and prescribed burns. They gain skills necessary to conduct field research, including plant and animal identifications, census techniques, and training in the use of GPS and GIS.

School year activities include (1) participation in bi-monthly group meetings to share research projects and participate in a supporting activity, (2) participation in a winter weekend session at the Dana Brown Overnight Center at SNR , (3) presentation of research results at the last meeting, and (4) interview for participation in the second year field research program (TERF).

TERF - Tyson Environmental Research Fellowship

The TERF is a field research mentoring program based at Tyson Research Center (TRC), utilizing small learning groups, near-peer mentoring, and student-scientist partnerships in the pursuit of authentic inquiry in environmental biology. This program is designed to build on the foundation of field skills taught in the SIFT program and apply them to on-going field research projects.

During the summer, teens spend 4 weeks in the field with research scientists. TRC provides a living laboratory with several ongoing large-scale, long-term experiments on issues pertinent to modern environmental problems, including invasive species impacts and eradication, biodiversity and rare species conservation, the ecology of infectious diseases, and habitat restoration.

During the school year following the summer research experience, the teens have continued interaction with project scientists as they work together to develop results from their field research into community presentations and interpretive displays at SNR.
